Do you consciously choose thrift or do you let it choose you? Let me explain.

I have had thrift choose me. I was living in a box called thrifty even when I didn’t need to be. I had chosen it for so long that I forgot that I had a choice and I didn’t have to be in that box anymore.

Now I consciously choose to be thrifty in areas of my life when it is appropriate. Thriftiness has nothing to do with money-in my opinion.

I believe that thriftiness is handed down to us by our parents and often we continue to tread that path, without thinking about what we are doing. We end up in an automatic response mode; ” I have to save that! I can’t spend that! Don’t throw that away! ” or the exact opposite; ” I’ll spend what I want! You can’t tell me what to do!”

Sometimes spending is good and sometimes saving is good. Sometimes, I shop the bargains and other times I spend $29 on a bottle of good wine!

How many times are you in judgment about how someone spends or saves their money? How many times do you judge how you spend or save your money?

I mean if you are going to save it be happy about it and if you decide to spend it, be happy about it! If you can’t do either of those things in joy, then perhaps you should just let it rest for a bit until you can be at peace with your choices.

There can be a happy medium and I have noticed that we all have different priorities. I like good chocolate and I will not scrimp on my chocolate. Other people may think me insane for spending $4 on a bar of chocolate or $29 on an occasional bottle of wine.

I on the other hand see no value in spending money for tickets to a sporting event. Do I think those that do are nuts? No, but I choose differently. I recognize that we are all different. And isn’t that the beauty of life?

“And what a beautiful life there is on planet earth, if you choose it. If you decided to believe that there is room for all manner of expressions on the planet.

So many people and so many beautiful expressions. Every, single one of them serves in it’s time until it doesn’t. You are the ones who get to choose.

However, some of you have forgotten that you are on a planet of free will and with free will is the companion of choice. Choice is your trump card dear ones. Do not let yourself live in a box, no matter how big or how safe or how pretty it may seem. A box is still a box. A box doesn’t allow you to be in infinite choice.

Infinite possibilities are exactly that-infinite. When you are in a box of your creation, even if you think someone else did it to you, they did not, you do not have infinite choice at your fingertips living in a box.

Everything awaits your choice. Until you choose a different way of being you will find yourself in the same old, same old spot wondering why it doesn’t change.

There is nothing to be afraid of-we promise. Whatever you choose in the moment is for the moment and in the next you can choose again. You do not have to be locked into, forever and ever, a single choice!

How freeing is that?! How wonderful is that?! Free will is a marvellous privilege and each and everyone of you was born with that. You get to choose how to think, how to act and how to be.

We suggest you be you-in all your magnificence-in all your glory. Even if you don’t see it, we do. How about you consider that a starting place when you feel like there is no where else to go?

Breathe…..just breathe and enjoy the being that you are and if you don’t like the you, that you are pretending to be, you can always choose again. That is the beauty your life!”

  1. I love this Linda! Every part of life is always a choice. It’s so good to look at these habits and see where they come from – and make a choice whether they really express us! Thrift is a great area of life to look at, because sometimes we don’t go for what we really want due to that “thrifty thinking” we learned young! Thank you for sharing!!

  2. That was a great post! Thank you so much. I used to be “guilty” of ignoring thriftiness and disliked the idea of second hand shops. Now I ADORE thrifting – not necessarily to save money (that is indeed a bonus, however) but because there is joy in finding new life in something that has a history. It can be recycled, refurbished, gifted and practically used.

  3. Hi Linda, I love this post. This weekend I choose to treat myself to a new Fedora hat that I saw in a quaint shop. This was a total frivolous purchase that took me over 3 hours to do. When I saw the price I thought of all the practical things I could buy with that money. I mulled over the hat for many hours as I toured Annapolis. I even tried on other similar hats that were half its price and none touched the one I loved. Finally, my friend said ot me… you need to give yourself permission to splurge every once in a while. I never splurge. So, I walked to that shop and bought it. I am happy with my decision. Sometimes in life we have to just let go and enjoy the ride and alow ourselves these fun treats.

    • Hey Susie! what a great friend you have and congratulations for honouring your need to splurge on something that calls to you. I am sure that you will have many happy adventures together with your hat and that wonderful friend!
