Kindness lifts us out of ourselves, whether it is offered to us or by us.

Linda Adsetts and The Group are here with their weekly Go for the Joy message. Enjoy!

“Embrace Kindness” by Angie Fraley

Some people are kind all the time and most people are kind some of the time. It really depends how we are feeling about life that allows us to see beyond the our own troubles, anxieties and sorrow and offer an act of kindness. It isn’t that we aren’t kind, it is just that in our troubles, we tend to contract ourselves and we are unable to notice, when a kindness is calling out to us, to be gifted, until in that moment we are gifted with a kindness.

Kindness lifts us out of ourselves, whether it is offered to us or by us. We feel better when we offer it and comforted by it when we receive it.

I was fortunate to have met Debbie. Debbie is my teacher friend, that began a kindness movement with her sister in a school in Alberta. It gained some attention and rippled out into the community and to other schools. Because it made the news it was noticed by a global kindness movement. They were invited to the UN to speak about their initiative. Pretty heady stuff! I didn’t find out about it right away-she is very modest.

Debbie then met the love of her life Mark. Mark and she spent 9 months travelling and they called it the kindness tour. They were on the look out for kindnesses on their travel. If you look you will find it and they did, everywhere they went. There were small actions and large actions that inspired and uplifted them.

Meanwhile, many years later, Kemy had begun a kindness movement on his college campus in Florida. It also rippled out into the community. When he finished college he decided that he would do a kindness tour and he googled that very thing and found Debbie and Mark on Youtube.

A phone call connected them and e-mails began to be exchanged. This past summer I met him when he visited Debbie and Mark in White Rock. He has been travelling around the U.S. on a scooter spreading the message of kindness. He wears a sign offering free hugs and high fives. He also carries a sign when he walks around, that says UR Awesome! I spent a day with them and was delighted to see how people responded to him. I watched him light up people with his smile and offers of a hug or high five. I also watched him from afar as he sat talking with a young man who was troubled. Smiles soon ensued.

Kindness is bountiful in our world. Debbie and her sister encouraged what was already waiting to be revealed in the young students they taught. Kemy encouraged it on the campus he attended. They both gave license to others to step out of their comfort zone and be with others in kindness.

One act of kindness can change some one’s day or even their world. We might never know why someone is grumpy and rascally, but we can offer a smile and a kind world and we might never know how that will affect them. We only know how we are affected by the gifting of it. It makes us feel good and that seems like a very good reason to be kind.

And The Group is reminding us that it is equally important to be kind to ourselves. Frequently we observe that your self-talk is harsh. We ask you would you speak to a friend in the same way? The most important relationship you can nurture is with yourself. When you love yourself unconditionally, accept yourself unconditionally then and only then are you able to truly change the world. If you have parts of yourself that you judge as unacceptable then you will quickly observe the same in the world around you. Neither is a very kind or loving act. You are, each of you, magnificent beings of light and love. You are awesome! Truly you are.

When you begin to acknowledge your own awesomeness you will easily see it in others, even when they hide it under their “stuff”. (smile)

You will find that your reality will shift and reflect your new attitude of love. Do the Dali-Dali Llama that is and be light with everything-most especially yourself. Soon everything will shine bright with possibilities and you will see the light that shines everywhere in everyone-even when it is hidden.

  1. As always, this was lovely, Linda! “Kindness lifts us out of ourselves”…just that line lifted my day and gave me much to consider. The more we tune in to kindness the more we feel it and express it. :o)

  2. Beautiful post Linda, I loved your point about turning the kindness towards ourselves in order to be able to spread it out to others. Thanks for the inspiring stories, too, I got a lift from reading those.

Great post Linda. I also loved your point about turning kindness towards ourselves, we are our own worst crtiic most of the time.

    • Thanks Zivana, you are right we are our own worst critics and yet we are all so awesome! How we forget that til someone reminds us. Consider yourself reminded!
