What sleep deprivation taught me about joy

I’m just thrilled to have my dear friend Alejandro Reyes from EnsoJourney with us today. The magic behind the technology here at Bliss Habits, Alex is one of those amazing people who can find time to help everyone shine! A kinder heart would be hard to find, you may remember when he chimed in on Joy earlier this year and today he’s back to celebrate laughter, a key component to the JOY both he and I like to celebrate!

Have you ever seen someone who hasn’t slept over a couple of days? I bet one of the words you could use to describe her is “Zombie”.

The fun thing is that, a couple of my sleep deprived friends taught me how you can find joy in every moment.

It all started the day after finals

I own a little graphic design studio with my brother. We are a bunch of weird people doing crazy things. Among the members there are two lovely girls, they still go to college and it’s super fun to look at them during their finals.

They are very dedicated, so much that they will sacrifice sleeping for great grades. Since they had a lot to do, they decided to skip sleeping for two days in order to finish their last projects.

It all began the next day.

Instead of the lovely chats and people running all over the studio, we had two zombie girls. Asking them to stay awake was almost impossible, so we decided to have lunch and then let them sleep.

One of the most joyful moments of my life was that lunch.

A lunch to remember

Our beloved zombie girls had a surprise hidden for us. When the brain is saving a lot of energy to stay awake, it starts to shut down some of it’s functions, in other words when you are not thinking straight it’s easier to make you laugh.

One of the girls dropped her fork and the other one started to laugh. Soon the one who dropped her fork started to laugh too!

A few seconds after, we were all laughing at anything.

We were laughing at my brother’s funny ways. We were laughing at how I say “raccoon”. We were laughing the loud laugh of one of our friends. It was a party!

When was the last time you laughed like crazy?

After the whole event, our zombie girls collapsed and were peacefully sleeping. The experience left me with one simple question:

When was the last time you laughed like crazy?

When you were a little kid, you laughed a lot. You discovered the world and there was a smile in your face. Kids have fun and enjoy the world at every moment (Kathy won’t let me lie on this one).

What happened when you became older and started to have responsibilities? You stopped laughing. I’m not saying you are unhappy, but you left behind all those moments full of laughs with your friends.

You started to focus a lot more on getting things done instead of having fun while you finish your tasks. This backwards method is what makes you feel like you just want to go to bed at the end of the day.

You, my dear friend, deserve a joyful life. You deserve to laugh out loud and be smiling for the rest of the day.

If feeling all joyful is not enough, laughing has a lot of great benefits for your life:

  • Laughing boosts your inmune system: This one is true, I have been healthy since I quit my job and began to spend more time laughing while working with my friends.
  • Laughing will relax all your body: No more tension, your body will feel like never before if you enjoy a joke or two.
  • Laughing releases the good old endorphins: Endorphins are the feel good chemicals that our body produces, if they fill your bloodstream you will feel like a million dollars!
  • Laughing can save your heart: Your heart is full of love and joy, a joyful heart is a lot healthier than a grumpy one. Allow your heart to be healthy, go and watch a funny video on youtube.

With all these benefits, I think it’s a great time to take a step towards a wonderful life. From this day you are going to make one simple change. You are going to laugh at least once everyday.

It may sound hard at first, but once you let your inner child run free, you will be laughing. Besides, our lovely zombie girls have shown us the way.

The zombie guide to a joyful life

First of all, you need to let your defenses down, and don’t worry too much about what’s going all around you, just as our zombie girls did. If you are too worried, you won’t be able to laugh. In order to solve this, surround yourself with people you trust or be in a space where you are comfortable.

You don’t have to end like a zombie, but you do have to let all your problems drift away at least for a while. Forget about work and focus on smiling.

As I said before, joy is an inner choice. Once your worries are all gone, it’s time to move the joy from the inside to the outside. Make this step super simple, just let a joke come out or do something silly.

Here is a small list of what you could do:

  • Play with words: During our insane lunch, I started saying random words in funny ways. Raccoon was an all time favorite, smurf was a great second choice.
  • Watch a funny video or movie: Youtube can solve this in a minute or less, but if you have the time allow yourself to play a funny movie, Kung Fu Hustle is one of our favorites.
  • Remember a silly moment: You have them, I have them. There was a time when you did something silly and now it’s a good time to remember it in good light.
  • Goof with your children: Children are natural fun factories, goof around with them, and don’t be afraid of feeling silly. This is also one of the best ways to become parent of the year!
  • Go and do something fun: Karaoke night (in our case guitar hero night), mini golf or bowling, you name it! Focus on the fun and not on doing it perfect. Like the time when I made a spare while tripping, I provoked a lot of laughs.

This is just a small list, there a re a million ways to spark a laugh. Allow yourself to discover all the ways you can start laughing. Believe me it’s all worth it.

Laughing towards a joyful life

As you can see, there is always a way to start laughing and having fun, even our Zombie girls had a wonderful time and remember that day as one of the best.

Let’s make Bliss Habits a place of joy, share with us a funny moment that you have lived. You will help spread a laugh around the world making it a better place. Don’t worry, it’s all for a good cause.

  1. This was such a fun and joyful post! I smiled when I read this. Thinking of actually printing it out and posting it somewhere – it was THAT good. Thank you, Kathy and Alejandro. The last time I laughed myself silly…probably watching one of my dogs being totally ridiculous. The laughing kept up for about 10 minutes afterwards.

    • I’m glad you liked it Theresa!
Oh, pets are wonderful for laughing until we can’t do it anymore. I bet your dogs enjoy watching you laugh and they will do it again just for the sake of it! 🙂

  2. Oh how I love this post! One of my favourite things in life is laughing till my belly aches and my cheeks hurt! It is the best way to feel good quickly and in a way that impacts mind, body and spirit.

When I work with clients sometimes I say outrageous things to break their patterns (and stories) and startle them into laughing. Works every time. When your work and life include a healthy dose of laughter, things just seem easier don’t they?

    • They are easier and far better, Sandi!
Something I really love about the new studio is all the laughter going on, we’re happier and like to be there for work each and every day. The girls wanted to get some zombie makeup done for me to share the picture along this post.
Maybe Kathy will allow me to update the post with their picture soon. 🙂
