What’s Your Whimsy

Big Eyed-Little Wendy Bird Girl ~ by Pinkytoast (click image for details)

As I told you on Monday, I was just thrilled and delighted to find out there was a group of women as devoted to whimsy as I am! I was so inspired I immediately sought Jennie (The Audacity Coach) out to see if she might like to say a few words about her Whimsy journey. SO happy to say she responded with an enthusiastic yes! Take it away Jennie…

When Annie Passanisi, The Whimsy Coach and Happiness Advocate, approached me with an opportunity to contribute to Whimsy for Wendys I had two immediate thoughts ::

1) Of course I’ll do it! I want to be involved in anything that Annie is doing!

2) What the hell does The Audacity Coach know about Whimsy?!? I’m screwed!

You see, I am known as the kick-ass coach, a life and career coach who rarely asks about your feelings and instead asks, “So what are you going to do about it?!” I put people on the spot, accept zero excuses, and push my clients to become as extraordinary as possible. There is nothing very whimsical about that style of coaching. How in the world was I going to offer some wisdom on whimsy for this ebook?!?

Panic set in.

But when I started pondering the question that Annie was posting on Twitter (#WhatsYourWhimsy), a boatload of realizations poured over me…

• I host online dance parties with my colleagues and clients

• I ride a bright orange cruiser bicycle all over NYC

• I have a hot pink Barbie silhouette mirror, which is the most expensive piece of art in my apartment

• I never write with black or blue ink…always fun colors and always in beautiful notebooks (no legal pads for me)

• I wear jeans to important business meetings without apology

• I cuss even when speaking professionally

• I sing showtunes on the subway

• I do an uncanny impression of Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch)

• I can tell really bad one-liner jokes and always get a huge laugh

I’ve got Whimsy, baby! Check me out!

I’m me. Ridiculously, unapologetically, hysterically me. I’m me at all times, whether or not that fits in with my surroundings. This is my whimsy.

But it wasn’t always that way.

In my piece of the Whimsy for Wendys book, I share my personal story of looking-good-on-paper-but-hating-life. I chased down the dream of ascending corporate ladders and wearing look-at-me-look-at-me suits and pumps in order to become “successful”. But in choosing to don these pretensions, I lost sight of myself. I became someone unrecognizable. I became someone I didn’t want to be. But one day, I snapped. I realized that I didn’t like the person I had become.

And then, I changed.

Now I devote my life to helping others who are having this experience get reacquainted with the person they want to be. I help them tap into their Audacity and bring forth their inner awesomeness. This is who I am. This is what I’m meant to do in the world. This is my whimsy!

A really interesting post – I had never thought about whimsy as anything that goes against the norm – I’d always imagined it as being something ‘fluffy’ and playful – but I really like the idea of eccentricity being whimsy – that’s something I could embrace!

  2. What a great post, Jennie! To all reading, the eBook is FANTASTIC and the Wendys who contributed are just phenomenal. Keeping whimsy despite the aches and pains of adulthood is so tough but those ladies make regaining whimsy so fun and easy!
